In some ways, self-ligating braces – also known as Damon Braces and/or In-Ovation Braces – are very similar to traditional braces.
They are made from many of the same materials: metal or ceramic brackets. However, the brackets do not require any elastic ligatures or ties, instead, use a special slide (or door) to hold the wire.
Research has shown this system produces less friction on the teeth, causing reduced soreness. Self-ligating braces generally require fewer adjustment appointments and can often work faster than traditional braces.
They come in two types: passive and active.
Passive brackets are often used at the beginning of the treatment to help teeth start moving into position, because they use a smaller archwire that creates less friction, allowing teeth to move more freely.
Active brackets use a thicker archwire that moves teeth more aggressively, but also offers more control for consistent and strong results.
